This recipe makes one classic sandwich, although it can be adapted to triple decker or standwich.
Ingredients
- 2+ slices of ham or turkey lunch meat
- 2+ slices of mid-sourdough bread
- 2+ slices of colby jack or smoked gouda cheese
- 2 tbs butter
- 1 egg
- Aldi Everything Bagel Seasoning (not totally essential, but it does elevate the sandwich to a whole new level.)
- Salt and pepper
Supplies
- Oven with broil mode
- Baking pan, half or full size
- Cast iron or other frying pan
- Spatula, for frying the egg
- Hot mitt
Instructions
Move the top rack of the oven up to be closer to the top coil. Set the oven to broil mode and start preheating the frying pan. Once the pan has preheated, start frying the egg. I usually break the yolk and fry it over easy so that the sandwich has an even distribution of egg. Sprinkle the egg with Everything Bagel Seasoning.
Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread, or both if you feel like it. Put the bread slices and lunch meat on the baking pan. Put the baking pan in the oven on the top rack for one minute. Toast the bread to your preferred amount, between none and literally ash. Stop a little before your preferred amount to put the cheese on the bread and then put it back in for another minute. The lunch meat should be warm by the time the cheese has melted.
Stack the bread, lunch meat, and egg in any order you like. I usually do bread, meat, egg, bread. If you opted for standwich, the final assembly might be hard to balance, but the result will be well worth your efforts. Salt and pepper to taste. Remember to turn off the oven.
