Privacy Policy

Forward: I know privacy policies are just the worst to read. I’ve tried to keep mine short while providing you with all the details. You really should read the whole thing, though.

Date effective: April 7th, 2022

This privacy policy describes how cheeseisatrafficsignal.com (“I”, “me”, “my”, and “this site” ), collects, uses, and shares personal information I obtain from individuals online. This site is a personal blog. By visiting or using this site, you agree to the terms of this policy. If you do not agree with this policy, do not access or use this site.

Data this site collects

Comments

When visitors leave comments on this site, I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy. After approval of your comment, your name, profile picture, and comment are visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Emails you send me

When you send me an email or use a contact form, I collect your email address, name, and the email’s contents.

Analytics

This site collects analytics using Jetpack.

Data Used: IP address, WordPress.com user ID (if logged in), WordPress.com username (if logged in), user agent, visiting URL, referring URL, timestamp of event, browser language, country code. Important: The site owner does not have access to any of this information via this feature. For example, a site owner can see that a specific post has 285 views, but he/she cannot see which specific users/accounts viewed that post. Stats logs — containing visitor IP addresses and WordPress.com usernames (if available) — are retained by Automattic for 28 days and are used for the sole purpose of powering this feature.

Activity Tracked: Post and page views, video plays (if videos are hosted by WordPress.com), outbound link clicks, referring URLs and search engine terms, and country. When this module is enabled, Jetpack also tracks performance on each page load that includes the JavaScript file used for tracking stats. This is exclusively for aggregate performance tracking across Jetpack sites in order to make sure that our plugin and code is not causing performance issues. This includes the tracking of page load times and resource loading duration (image files, JavaScript files, CSS files, etc.). The site owner has the ability to force this feature to honor DNT settings of visitors. By default, DNT is currently not honored.

Server logs

This site maintains server logs which may include your IP address, user agent, timestamp of the event, operating system, requested resource, and geographical location. These logs are retained indefinitely.

How I collect data

  • When you submit a comment.
  • When you contact me via email or contact form.
  • Automatically, by site analytics and server logs.

Purpose of data

Comment related data, such as your name, email, and comment are just to process your comment. I collect your email address to reduce spam, contact you about your comment, and to notify you of changes to this policy. Your email isn’t publicly displayed or added to any mailing list. You don’t have to use your real name or your main email. Your comment, name, profile picture, and email are visible to site admins and moderators for the purpose maintaining and moderating the site.

Automatically collected data, such as site analytics, is to help me understand where my visitors are coming from, which pages are popular, and for site security purposes.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. Emails you send me are retained indefinitely.

How I share your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Your data may be provided to a backup service for the purpose of backing up the site. Your data is not sold to anyone and it isn’t shared beyond this site’s essential functions.

Cookies

This site uses cookies.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name and email address in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year. Other cookies this site uses may include tracking cookies, cookies set by content hosted on this site, and other cookies to remember your preferences.

How I respond to Do Not Track requests

This site doesn’t respond to browser Do Not Track requests.

Other

This site is not intended for children under the age of 13. I do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If you are under 13, do not use or visit this site.

Options you have with your data

If you have left comments or emailed me, you can request to receive an exported file of the data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. To request a copy of your data or to request it to be erased, send an email to jacob@cheeseisatrafficsignal.com.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be changed at any time without notice. Please review it occasionally to be up to date with my most current policy. If you would like to opt out of the changes, you can send an email to jacob@cheeseisatrafficsignal.com requesting your data to be deleted.

Afterward: Phew, that was a lot, but you made it! Thank you for reading this policy.
