Reading Beowulf, #1

A quick introduction: I’m reading Beowulf because it’s mentioned in English Literature by William J. Long (1945) and I was inspired to read it. I’m reading the English translation by Seamus Heaney, because I can’t read Anglo-Saxon. I’m about halfway through and I’m really enjoying it. I love how it’s so extra at times, like when Beowulf swims in the sea for 5 days, while wearing chain mail, while carrying a sword, and fighting sea monsters. The overall feel of the world reminds me a lot of Lord of The Rings: the gold, named swords, riders and great halls. And how could it not? Tolkien was inspired by Beowulf and other Old English literature. I also like how much is left to the reader’s imagination: the physical appearances of Beowulf and Grendel are hardly mentioned and the focus remains on their identities.
