Spring ’23, Day 24

Today I rescued a pencil! I found it by the edge of a sidewalk, hiding in perfect limbo between cement and grass. This is a writing instrument with some serious history. The pencil has most, if not all, of its original length. Its orange paint is peeling, and it has a relic feel. The golden letters “Paper Mate – EverStrong” are barely legible. The eraser is a perfect dome, minus one bite-shaped divot. The lead is worn down to a similar shape, but thankfully without the evidence of illegal gnawing. Despite its condition, I suspect it only has a few miles on it. Perhaps it was owned by someone who did more erasing than writing, or someone with very precise teeth, but no inclination to use them to sharpen it. Whatever the case may be, I’m going to clean it, sharpen it, and write some words. Maybe even sentences. Who knows what it will say?
