Mechanical Keyboard Research, #2

Today I continued my research. There’s so many options! I’m realizing more and more that I don’t know what I want. It’s like when you walk into an ice cream shop thinking you want strawberry, but then you see 175 flavors and you’re not so sure anymore.

Here’s what I’ve narrowed it down to so far:

  • Probably brown switches or similar (I’ve used blue clones and reds: the blues are too sharp sounding and the reds don’t have enough feedback.)
  • I like layouts which don’t have weird gaps between keys and empty spaces with no keys.
  • ~60% layout. I’m thinking I really do need the number row and bracket keys.
  • Standard arrow keys (for PICO-8 games).
  • RGB would be nice, but it’s not essential.

Even all this still only narrows it down to about 150 flavors. Maybe I build the cheapest keyboard possible to figure out what I actually like/don’t like and then build something more in line with my findings.
