Playing “Getting Over It”, #1

Recently I’ve been playing Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. I know it has a reputation for being a rage game or at least extremely polarizing, and that’s why I’m playing it. I also love the surrealist art style and the concept. Anyway, here’s some observations so far:
I play much better when I don’t hold on to my progress too tightly. Like at the first wall, being okay with falling for an instant to grab the next hold makes it easy. Real progress is when the earlier sections get easier, not the few moments when I make it further than I have before. It feels great to see new terrain, but it’s also just a glimpse before I accidentally yeet myself back to the beginning. But that’s okay: I enjoy starting over. I like the feeling that there’s no progress to lose. I also find that enjoying the challenge of each obstacle is easier knowing that I’ll be flying by them soon enough.

About lag and controls. The game occasionally lags, like at the first big tree and sometimes randomly. The controls feel pretty good, although the hammer is sometime erratic. Would it really be Getting Over It if the hammer never had a mind of its own and it always ran at 60 fps? I’m accepting lag as part of the experience and any time I feel myself getting even the least bit frustrated, I take a break.

This is a journey. I may reach the summit, but even if I don’t, I’m already glad for the time I’ve spent with this game.
