Resting, #27

Today I thought more about passenger motion in games. Passenger motion is amplified when you play with friends. I always like the feeling when all my friends are in a car and I’m driving. I get to take them places. I especially like the feeling when my friends are driving. I get to look out the window and see where they take me. But my favorite part about being a passenger is that I’m progressing without doing anything. The driver is handling moving forward, all I have to do is enjoy the ride. However, riding in cars is almost always liminal. A transitory experience between the main gameplay (not counting racing games because you can’t ride with friends.) I haven’t found many games where I can just ride around with friends.

Being moved by the game, like in a boat on a set path, doesn’t feel the same. I think because I don’t trust the game to take me somewhere I’ll like. Trust in the driver is what makes being a passenger enjoyable.
