Procedural Stars in Blender, Part 2

Hey, it’s that time of year again! I can never get enough of stars, especially procedural stars.

The main difference between these stars and the part 1 stars is limiting the Voronoi texture. I wanted a few medium stars, but it wasn’t working. It seems like Blender 2.79 can’t quite reach the same sparse Voronoi like Blender 2.8. I tried using a noise texture as a mask, and it worked, but then the stars on the edge of the mask were dim. I cranked the contrast and it removed the dim stars. Two other minor differences: I colored some stars orange and some blue, but it isn’t noticeable. I also added some glow in compositing.

I designed the scene to look good from the camera, but it’s on the world shader, so there may be other nice compositions floating around in there. My favorite thing about procedural art is the constant flow of happy accidents. I’ll be dialing in a value and see something cool happen out of frame. I collect them all.

Here’s the blend file:

I used Blender 2.79, but it might work in newer versions.
